Plugin Support

Cyberhaven's Windows Sensor installs Microsoft Office plugins for Outlook (Classic), Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Cyberhaven also provides an add-in for the New Microsoft Outlook via Microsoft 365 integrated apps—covering both Windows and macOS clients. Use these guides to plan, deploy, and maintain both experiences across your endpoints.

Installation Overview

  1. Review prerequisites: Confirm sensor, Office, and account requirements in the Plugin Prerequisites guide before deployment.
  2. Deploy the Windows Sensor: Install the latest Cyberhaven Sensor package on target Windows endpoints. The installation automatically registers the Office plugins (CyberhavenOutlookMonitor, CyberhavenWordMonitor, CyberhavenExcelMonitor, CyberhavenPowerPointMonitor). Use your preferred software distribution tool (for example, Microsoft Intune, SCCM, or a local MSI install).
  3. Restart Office applications: After the sensor installs, restart Outlook and any open Office apps to activate the plugins. The Endpoint Sensors page reports a "Restart Outlook" action until the client relaunches Outlook.
  4. Validate add-ins: In Outlook and other Office applications, verify that the Cyberhaven add-ins appear under File > Options > Add-ins. Confirm that they are enabled and not listed under Disabled Application Add-ins.
  5. Deploy the New Outlook add-in (if applicable): Use the Microsoft 365 admin center to publish the Cyberhaven add-in to users running the New Microsoft Outlook on Windows or macOS. Follow the deployment steps in New Outlook Add-in Installation.
  6. Review Office plugin guides: Use the Outlook (Classic) and Word/Excel/PowerPoint plugin guides to validate configuration and keep the add-ins enabled.

Prerequisites

Cyberhaven's application plugins extend data protection capabilities into Microsoft Office applications and email clients. These plugins provide enhanced visibility and control over data activities that occur within productivity applications, enabling consistent policy enforcement for file and content interactions. Plugins work alongside endpoint sensors and other Cyberhaven components to deliver comprehensive coverage for data movement within supported applications.

Requirements

Office plugin (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook Classic)

  • Supported Windows endpoint with Microsoft Office applications installed (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook Classic).
  • Cyberhaven Sensor already deployed on the endpoint to enable plugin functionality.
  • Restart Outlook after Sensor installation if it was running during the setup.

New Outlook Add-in

  • Supported endpoint running the New Microsoft Outlook (September 2023 or later) on Windows or macOS.
  • Microsoft 365 admin center access for deployment.
  • Users signed in with Microsoft accounts (the add-in cannot be deployed to non-Microsoft accounts).
  • Cyberhaven Sensor already deployed on the endpoint to enable add-in functionality.
  • Use Microsoft’s limited deployment scope to pilot and validate the add-in before rolling it out organization-wide.
  • Understand that policy enforcement depends on Cyberhaven completing content inspection of attachments before Outlook submits the email; the add-in can block message send if inspection detects a policy violation.

The New Outlook Add-in is not compatible with Outlook (Classic); continue to use the legacy Office plugin for Classic Outlook coverage.

Dependencies

Office plugin (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook Classic)

  • Cyberhaven Sensor for Windows.
  • Microsoft Office 2010 or later (32-bit or 64-bit), including Outlook Classic, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime — not required if Microsoft Office is already installed.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later.
  • Latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.

Supplemental Tasks

  • Prevent plug-ins from being disabled: Configure registry policies or managed add-ins to keep the Cyberhaven plugins enabled for Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Suppress performance warnings: Update Outlook resiliency registry keys if users see "Outlook disabled the add-in" banners.
  • Deploy the New Outlook add-in: Publish the integrated app and roll it out in stages using the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • Troubleshoot issues: Collect diagnostic data, enable TRACE logs, or temporarily disable the Outlook plugin on a test host to isolate behavior.

Detailed procedures for these tasks are provided in the Outlook (Classic) plugin guide, the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint plugin guide, and the New Outlook Add-in Installation article.
